"An amazing introduction into mountaineering."
Mount Baldy is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains, and at over 10,000ft of elevation, it provides beautiful views and an amazing day of hiking the entire way up. This hike is accessible year-round, although technical gear (such as ice axes and crampons) are required in snowy conditions. This is an excellent adventure for clients looking to get into peak-bagging or technical mountaineering in Southern California, as it is not only a beautiful route, but also it is fairly close to the city and very accessible.
With over 3000ft of elevation gain, this hike is a moderate/advanced full-day adventure with many different challenges, and will be both an unforgettable trip and also a great learning experience. In the winter, skills such as self-arresting and basic glissading will be covered in applicable snow conditions. Clients looking to go on this hike will also undergo a basic fitness screening before embarking on the trip. Required gear is appropriate hiking shoes, water (3 liters), snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, appropriate clothing for the weather (consult with the SCAC staff for specifics on what this will mean for your trip), and a headlamp.
